The Road Home with Jamil Jivani is a podcast featuring interviews with activists, writers and innovators.

The Road Home Podcast Series on Nationalism

We are on a journey to discuss, debate, and explore ideas of nationalism. When does nationalism cross the line to become a negative, or even harmful idea? How can it be used to help working class or marginalized communities? Why is nationalism used by some politicians and activists, but not others?

On this journey, we interviewed a diverse group of experts. We will bring you each of those conversations as part of The Road Home video and podcast series.

1. Chris Arnade

Episode one features Chris Arnade. He is a photographer, freelance writer and author of the book Dignity: Seeking Respect in Back Row America. Chris is a former Wall Street trader who left his corporate life in Manhattan to document poverty and addiction in the Bronx. He has since traveled across America to tell the stories of working class communities across the country. We hope you enjoy episode one of The Road Home’s series on nationalism, which we recorded in spring 2020.

2. Saagar Enjeti

Our second stop on this journey to discuss, debate, and explore ideas of nationalism takes us to Washington, D.C., to speak with the co-host of a popular YouTube show, “Rising with The Hill’s Krystal Ball and Saagar Enjeti.” Our guest Saagar Enjeti is a political commentator who co-hosts the Realignment podcast and co-authored The Populist's Guide to 2020: A New Right and New Left are Rising. He is a strong advocate of the idea that the political right and left are changing in America, and also believes changes are needed to American immigration policy, despite being a child of immigrants himself. We hope you enjoy this conversation with Saagar Enjeti from spring 2020.

3. Barbara Perry

When many people hear the term nationalism, they think of racism, hate, or exclusion. Because nationalism has often been co-opted by extremists. Professor Barbara Perry, the director of Ontario Tech University’s Centre on Hate, Bias and Extremism, studies extremist movements, particularly white nationalism and far-right extremism. We ask Professor Perry about her research, and how she distinguishes the nationalist ideas held by extremists from the nationalist ideas held by other groups. This insightful interview with Professor Barbara Perry is from summer 2020.
